When creating a bedroom scheme, simple, natural environments that facilitate peaceful reflection have a real appeal. Incorporating a little bit of Zen into your bedroom is the perfect way to make it a haven to which you can retreat after a long day. Check out these 10 tricks to channel peace and tranquillity into your home.
Clear the decks
A tidy home means a tidy mind, so keep your bedroom in a tranquil state by banishing clutter and ensuring it's clean at all times.
Start by clearing the tops of bedside tables, and stick to the bare essentials, such as a book, a reading light, perhaps a plant or flowers, and a glass of water. Store any additional items out of sight.
Connect with nature
While it may not be an option to have an entire wall of windows, you can take inspiration from this scheme and bring the outside into your bedroom. Introduce greenery in the form of potted plants – large, sculptural ones would work well – and fresh flowers or attractive foliage.
Sleep in symmetry
Simple, balanced décor can be just the ticket if you want to achieve a Zen-like state of calm.
Anchor your bed with two bedside tables – bare wood is a good choice – and a pair of glowing lamps. Stick to a neutral, clean backdrop – white walls and bed linen – and let tranquillity reign.
Enjoy the view
A room with a view can be a great de-stressor. Try positioning a chair near a window and take in the glorious vista outside; you might be surprised at how even an urban scene can take your mind off anxieties.
E nsure the windowsill isn't cluttered, and have window dressings opened fully for maximum connection with the outside. In the summer, throw open your windows as often as possible.
Add in artwork
Bringing in a little – but not too much – artwork that reminds you of someone you love, or that's simply of something you enjoy looking at, is a great way to make your bedroom a positive and meaningful space.

Keep the bedroom a gadget-free zone
Bedrooms are for sleeping and relaxing, which means a definite thumbs down to laptops, TVs, mobile phones and computers.
Not only will this automatic gadget ban stop you from working into the early hours, it will help you to switch off fully when you retire for the night. And is there anything more irritating than the blinking of LED lights around the room? Why not try an old-fashioned alarm clock and sleep soundly until it rings.
Keep the air fresh
Even in the winter, you still need to ventilate your bedroom, even if it's just for five minutes. A stuffy atmosphere is not conducive to a good night's sleep, so inject some fresh air into the room at least once a day.
Stick to muted tones
Neutrals are great for creating an unobtrusive and relaxing atmosphere. If you're feeling a little more adventurous, opt for something soothing, such as a muted blue or green. The key is to avoid bright, harsh colours and keep it simple.
Work in natural textures
Get closer to nature by harnessing the raw beauty of natural materials. Think unbleached cotton sheets, pure linen pillowcases and simple wooden furniture.
Perfection and crispness isn't a priority here – it's all about feel-good textures and a palette of natural hues to create a serene haven where you can rest your head at night.
Swap your sheets at least once a week
There's nothing like slipping between freshly laundered sheets for promoting a good night's sleep.
Make sure you change your bedding once a week (even if it's only the pillowcases and sheets) and, to maintain that first-day freshness, give them a quick spritz with a fragrant linen spray.

Add in soothing wallpaper
If you don't have the advantage of a soothing view from your window, fashion your own with a panel of printed wallpaper.
Pick soothing greens and natural scenes scattered with leaves, birds and woodland. Then dream of the great outdoors while you snuggle up in the evenings.
